Fable 5: Audit the Checklist That Approved the Work

A practical experiment for the final days of Fable 5 access: give it a project you already consider complete, then ask it to audit both the work and the checklist that approved it.

Key takeaways

  • Audit completed work as well as the checklist that approved it.
  • Separate what was recorded, reflected, and verified in the actual environment.
  • Turn repeated findings into validators, evals, or explicit gates.
Fable 5 release audit workflow showing Recorded, Reflected, and Verified in Execution, with a checklist and the message Audit the work, then audit the checklist.

If your Fable 5 access is ending soon, 𝐝𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐢𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐭𝐚𝐬𝐤.

Give it something you already called “done” — and ask it to 𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗶𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝘁.

I tried this while releasing a new version of my personal AI agent project.

Fable 5 caught several issues during the work:

• stale metadata before implementation

• a conflict between a new verification rule and an existing privacy rule

• a better validation sequence: make the validator fail first, then fix the issue — RED → GREEN

It also followed an approved multi-step plan through a long implementation turn without repeatedly asking for direction.

But the more useful lesson came after the first “done.”

A version-checking checklist created during the same session had missed an outdated command in INSTALL.md.

A few other issues only surfaced after I added a separate release checklist, ran a manual scan, and asked the model to take another pass.

That distinction mattered.

My takeaway was not that a stronger model can replace verification.

It was this:

✦ A stronger model is most useful when it helps expand the verification system — not when it becomes the verification system.

A practical experiment for your remaining time with Fable 5:

  1. Choose a project you already consider complete.

  2. Provide the result, plan, checklist, change history, and validation logs.

  3. Ask it to separate what was recorded, what was reflected, and what was verified in the actual environment.

  4. Ask what the checklist itself never inspected.

  5. Turn repeated findings into validators, evals, or explicit gates.

“Verified” means very little unless 𝒘𝒆 𝒂𝒍𝒔𝒐 𝒔𝒂𝒚 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒇𝒊𝒆𝒅.
